Selecting a solar panel for your home or project by a tiering system of manufacturers (not product) which fluctuate quarterly potentially isn’t the best criteria for quality assurance when buying solar. Remember, the above is an endorsement which won’t stay with your chosen solar panel for life, so why use it as a key factor in your selection process?

Testing institutes such as TUV Rheinland or DNV GL present a far greater insight and case toward product quality selection. • Your insight is more than welcome Jenny. Quite simply, this is a list comprised of multiple sources already publically available on the internet brought together in an easily accessible and indexable fashion for what people are searching for. This content isn’t written to disagree with the BNEF tiering system. It is about transparency towards individual product quality against certain marketing tactics presented by deceiving sales companies which exploit tiering systems as a product quality guideline. Greater perspective needed to be offered around the term “Tier 1 solar panels” and this is all which is being conveyed here.

    • This PDF dated March 2019 is the most responsible publication released by BloombergNEF to address global concerns, that of which this article is aimed to address: Section 1 paragraph 2. We strongly recommend that module purchasers and banks do not use this list as a measure of quality, but instead consult a technical due diligence firm such as Edif ERA (formerly OST Energy), ATA Renewables, Sgurr Energy, DNV GL, Black & Veatch, TUV, E3, STS Certified, Clean Energy Associates, Solarbuyer, Pvbuyer, Enertis, Oravia, Leidos Engineering or Phoventus. These would usually consider what factory the module comes from, as well as the brand, and give an informed opinion on whether the modules will perform as expected. – Brilliant, for social responsibilty, do more to ensure this is conveyed and better publicised. Until then, there must be a publically available point for sellers and buyers to reference identifying tiering systems with limited definition are not exploited as a product quality guideline.
