With only a couple of minutes browsing on the internet you’ve now discovered that the LG NeON R is one of the better solar panels available for high-end performance. However, like any products of greatness there is often always a weakness, or more precisely a reason against the selection.

Make and model:  LG NeON R.

Variants:  360W/ 365W / 370W.

  Build quality, Warranty, Efficiency.

Almost all products of superiority attract a price tag to match. However, what if there was a combined technology score with relevance to current market offerings to help better determine the overall value? That’s what the Solar Review Module Assessment Criteria is designed to do, and the LG NeON R solar panel range is no exception to the scrutiny. Therefore, does the so-called “superior technology” justify a superior price tag? Time to Discover.

Visually assessing the LG NeON R provides a good insight into the overall design quality. No excess silicon splurged around the rear edges, solid high-gloss outer frame and an ultra light-weight construction. The key to the lightweight design? Less glass. Consisting of a minimalistic 2.8mm glass protective superstrate (front sheet) which is reinforced with a transparent polymer layer to retain exceptional durability.

Understanding more about the technical design aspect, the LG NeON R incorporates a unique back-contact design. Although nothing new, back-contact refers to no busbars on the front of the cell, as they are incorporated onto the rear of the solar cell. A method which allows for the maximum surface area to convert light into energy. The LG NeON R facilitates an improved electrical design which offers lower electrical resistance and improved high-temperature performance. The future of high-powered 60-cell monocrystalline solar technology will be shaped by the groundbreaking, innovative design of the LG NeON R.

LG NeON R - Solar Review

LG Solar

NeON R Design; Outstanding
  • N-Type mono.
  • Rear cell contact.
  • PERC enhanced.
  • Glass-laminate (White).
  • Innovative.
  • InterSolar award.
  • TÜV certified.

Constructed with a double-walled aluminium frame which gives facilitates impressive strength of 6000 Pa on the front and up to 5400 Pa on the rear side of the LG NeON R for wind loading. A rating far higher than the IEC industry standard rating of 2400 Pa. The most extreme Damp Heat Test (DHT) recorded was up to 4000 hrs with only 3.5% degradation. Potentially the only durability slight when considering alternative industry leading modules.

Thermal cycle testing is beyond impressive up to 800 cycles with a detriment of only 1.4% recorded. Notably, PID (Potential Induced Degradation) is non-existent, Salt Mist Resistance (Coastal areas) is in line with IEC 61701 max severity 6 and Ammonia resistance (Agricultural areas) meets IEC 62716 for a respectable durability ranking. Finally, hail impact for an exceptionally lightweight protective glass superstrate is a testament to engineering prowess withstanding hail impact up to 35mm (20.7g) at 27m/s in test conditions.

NeON R Durability; Elite
  • Snow load 6000Pa.
  • Front wind load 6000Pa.
  • Rear wind load 5400Pa.
  • Damp heat testing 4000Hrs.
  • Thermal cycle testing 800+Hrs.
  • PID Free.
  • Salt mist resistance certification
    IEC 61701 (Severity 6).
  • Amonia resistance certification
    IEC 62716.
  • 35mm hail impact at 23m/s.

An excellent efficiency rating of up to 21.4% delivers a power output of up to 370W from a 60-cell module. The leading efficiency of the LG NeON R is even more compelling when understanding the Temperature Coefficient of a mere -0.30%/C. The lower Temperature Coefficient, the better for real-world conditions in especially warmer climates. Watch this space as LG should have an improved module efficiency of the LG NeON R showcasing an impressive 380Wp output within a 60-cell module by early to mid-2019. Rounding off an imposing efficiency ranking is a superior positive power tolerance between 0-3%.

NeON R Efficiency; Superior
  • 20.3% Maximum module efficiency.
  • -0.29%°C Temperature coefficient.
  • 0/3% Power tolerance.

The LG NeON R is produced with two EL flash tests both before and after lamination to ensure no cells with defects or micro-cracks. The high-grade N-type solar cell delivers outstanding long-term performance. With no boron used, light-induced degradation (LID) is obsolete. Boasting a much lower rate of degradation per year when compared to the market average. Recently redefined, after 25 years of use, expect the LG NeON R to produce no less 92% of its nominal power at Standard Test Conditions (STC). 2% degradation within the first year and an outstanding 0.25% per year after that.

LG Solar

NeON R Performance; Outstanding
  • 2% degradation in the 1st year.
  • 0.2% degradation per annum.
  • 25-year linear performance warranty.
  • Parts & service performance warranty.

A comprehensive 25-year product warranty ensures the LG NeON R is equipped with one of the most resounding product guarantees available. Notably what sets the guarantee apart from many other solar module guarantees is the parts and labour expense inclusion for the extensive period.

Considering the LG Solar distribution method, the guarantee requires improvement by following the lead of alternative manufacturers ensuring an Authorised Installer Network with additional end-user benefits. A win for both LG and the end-user would ensure LG NeON R solar panels installed to manufacturer specifications. Providing greater product life and warranty transparency when manufacturer specified installation methods have adhered.
