Warranty period
Standard product warranty: 5 years
5-year limited factory warranty from commissioning. Within this period, SMA repairs or replaces any unit with a product-related defect at no charge. The 5-year period applies automatically, with no registration requirement.
Extended product warranty: 10 years (free on registration)
Units commissioned on or after 1 October 2021 receive an additional 5 years of full warranty at no cost: 10 years total. The owner must register the device via SMA's online product registration portal within 12 months of commissioning; missing this window forfeits the free extension, though paid options remain.
Paid warranty extensions: up to 20 years
Beyond the 10-year covered period, paid extension plans (ACTIVE and COMFORT) extend coverage to 10, 15, or 20 years from commissioning. For a 10 kVA unit such as the STPSE 10.0, indicative Australian ACTIVE pricing was approximately AUD $455 (ex GST) for a further 5 years and AUD $910 for a further 10: confirm with SMA Australia as figures may have changed. Extensions must be purchased during the active factory warranty period.
What’s covered
Parts and repair or replacement
SMA repairs or replaces a unit that fails due to a product-related defect within the warranty period. Replacements include all applicable firmware and software updates; SMA aims to return units in the shortest possible time.
Shipping and customs costs (Australian residential)
For Australian private residential installations, the factory warranty covers shipping and customs charges for sending a unit to SMA and returning the repaired or replacement unit, a region-specific benefit not included in all markets.
On-site service labour (Australian residential)
Where SMA elects on-site repair, travel and accommodation for SMA service personnel are covered for Australian private residential installations, as is removal and reinstallation labour by SMA or an authorised SMA service partner: provided the inverter is at ground level or on a safely accessible rooftop.
Exclusions
Customer's own employees and unauthorised third parties: Labour for removal, reinstallation, or other work by the customer's own employees or third parties not authorised by SMA is expressly excluded. Only SMA personnel or SMA-authorised service partners are covered for on-site service costs.
Difficult access: height and equipment costs: Costs of safely accessing inverters on steeply pitched or inaccessible rooftops: lift equipment, scaffolding, elevated work platforms: are not covered. On-site labour coverage applies only at ground level or a safely accessible rooftop.
Consequential and indirect loss: Consequential losses from a defect: lost revenue or income from lost generation, lost profits, or indirect damages: are not covered. Compensation claims beyond repair or replacement are excluded absent a separate written agreement with SMA.
Damage from improper use, installation, or external causes: Defects from improper installation (including by unqualified persons), misuse, neglect, unauthorised modification, power surges, lightning, flooding, or other external causes are not covered: only product-related defects under normal operating conditions qualify.
Consumables and cosmetic damage: Consumable components subject to normal wear and tear, as well as cosmetic damage that does not affect functionality, are excluded from warranty coverage.
Transferability
Transferable to a new owner with written notice to SMA, a warranty transfer of ownership form registers the change. The remaining period transfers with the device.
How to make a claim
Contact SMA service support via the customer portal (my.sma-service.com) or SMA's regional service line. SMA assesses the fault and arranges repair or replacement. For Australian residential installations, shipping and SMA personnel travel for on-site repairs are covered; where SMA elects on-site repair, removal and reinstallation labour by SMA or an SMA-authorised partner is included, provided the device is at ground level or on a safely accessible rooftop. Transferable to a subsequent property owner with written notification to SMA.
